I’m Not Busy, I’m Being Productive

I read an article recently suggesting that using the word “busy” or saying “I’ve been busy lately,” is not a good term or phrase to use.  The implication does not share anything specific going on in your life with others.  In fact, the word busy can even lead people to think you’re being ‘lazy’ and just avoiding the real question.  The story was interesting to me.  I made note of it in my head to ponder further.

I do find that I go through stages when I say or feel ‘busy’ but the truth is that I’m being very productive in one or more areas of my life.  I have not written any new stories or articles in my personal life.  I have not submitted any new pieces for publication to publishers in several weeks.  I have not written many blog posts either.  Although sometimes I feel sad about that, I realize that I’m productively working on more important things.

For example, I’m writing quite a bit for my grad school class assignments.  I’ve taken the lead in a group presentation I’m giving next week – laying out the PowerPoint slides.  I’m also conducting research and developing survey questions for a case study project with my school partner and a health communications book.  In addition, I signed up to give two Toastmasters speeches in the next two months.  Public speaking is a new hobby of mine that I’m rather enjoying – bringing my writing to life in oral form.  I am quite active with several professional goals.

In my personal life, I’ve managed to spend more quality time with my kids lately even while doing all of the above.  I designate time to play games or read with my girls even after a long day. This week is my daughter’s birthday (Oct. 29) and she has a mini piano recital on Friday (Oct. 30).  We have plans on Thursday to bring cupcakes, treat bags, games and party favors to her second grade class.  Last night we stuffed 25 gift bags for her friends.  We have future plans for pumpkin carving, trick or treating and backyard obstacle courses. I’d definitely call that productive, not busy!  🙂

I have to remind myself to share a bit more when I’m asked the question, “How are you?” or “What’s happening?” or “What have you been up to lately?”  I don’t want to say “Oh, I’m just busy.”  That is so boring and so not true!  I’m doing many interesting things.  I bet you are too.  Let us recognize that and share the small details in our day.

I want to be…
productive, not busy.
grateful, not resentful.
gracious, not boastful.
joyful, not jealous.
generous, not prejudiced.
