Conversations with my Kids: “Tummy aches and Trucks – Two True Stories”

I’m going to share funny things my children say from time to time here.  Why?
1. Because they really are hilarious, and
2. So I won’t forget them and what they’re like at their current age.

Conversations with my Kids: “Tummy aches and Trucks – Two True Stories”

A few weeks ago, my seven year old asked me if we could go swimming at the local community pool.  She made this request ten minutes after consuming a huge chocolate chip pancake covered in syrup and a large glass of milk.

Vivian (age 7): “Can we go swimming now, mommy?”

Me: “Maybe this afternoon we can go.”

Vivian: “Why can’t we go now?”

Me: “We all just ate breakfast.”

Vivian: “Yeah, so why can’t we go now?”

Me: “You just finished eating a gigantic pancake.  If you go swimming now, you might upset your stomach!”

Vivian is quiet for a moment, processing what I said.  Then she says:
“I didn’t know I could hurt my tummy’s feelings.  I didn’t know that my stomach could become upset!”

Me: I raise my eyebrow.  I put my hand up to my lip to hide my smile.  I forget how literal my girl is, even at age seven.  I try hard not to laugh.  Then I take a moment to explain.

“Our stomachs don’t have feelings.  What I meant is that if we just eat and then try to do a form of exercise, it can often make our tummies hurt.  Food needs time to digest.  When I said “hurt the tummy” I meant that it could physically hurt with pain if we try to do too much activity right after a big meal.”

Vivian seemed to understand after that.  But I laughed to myself off and on the rest of the day about our conversation.

My two year old was in the mini van with me. We were riding home from a visit to the grocery store, a typical weekend chore for our family.  She and I shared the following discussion:

Lana (age 2): “Mommy, mommy, mommy!”

Me: “Yes, what is it?”

Lana: “I busy.”

Me: “You’re busy?”

Lana: “Yes.”

Me: “Okay, congrats!  It’s good to stay busy.”

Lana: “Mommy, mommy, mommy!”

Me: “What is it?”

Lana: “You a truck!”

Me: “I’m a truck, how nice!”

Lana: “You a pretty truck.”

Me: “Why thank you.”

Lana: “You a pretty truck.  I a pink truck.”

Me: “That sounds good.”

Lana: “Mommy, I kidding.  We not trucks.  You mommy, I Lana.”

Me: “Whatever you say.”
