When Did Pearl Jam become Oldies Music?

Not long ago at my oldest daughter’s swim lesson I overheard two teenage girls talking about music.   My guess is that they were about 18 or 19 years old.  One girl said to the other, I have this oldies song I want to share with you. It’s by this group called Pearl Jam.

I almost fell out of my chair!   Oldies music? Pearl Jam? Are you kidding me?

Pearl Jam isn’t oldies. I was a teenager when Pearl Jam came out.

Wait, now I’m 36 years old.   Okay…..

So maybe Pearl Jam is oldies for some people….

But when I think of “Oldies” music, I think of what my parents played for me while I was a kid – Dion and the Belmonts, Elvis, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, the Commodores, and countless others that dad played albums of (That’s right, you heard me correctly – ALBUMS! not CD’s or I-tunes) in the living room so we could dance.

Sigh!  I suppose I am becoming “older” but I won’t call myself “oldies” yet.

Ahh, do you recall that moment when you realize the generation you grew up in is now considered an “Oldie” by other people in today’s youth….?
